For information, specific to your age group, please use the tabs below for relevant ‘Age’ section. Otherwise our Calendar and Noticeboard are full of the latest news and events.

U8/9s

In 2017 the U8 & U9s section is for children who were born in 2008 & 2009. The U8/9s manager this year is Dolores Geaney and she will keep you informed about the all upcoming events.

Welcome Tennis

In January, each year the children are invited to come to a welcome social tennis event. This is to welcome the new U8&9 members, introduce them to the manager and club and get the children playing together.

Fun Tennis

The main event run for this age group is fun tennis. This runs from September to April each year. The programme is organised by our Transition year students.  It comprises drills and games which enhance basic tennis skills but its main aim is to encourage social interaction and a love of tennis in our young members. The kids love both the tennis and their teenage mentors. Places are limited and sign up in advance is required for the programme which has a nominal charge.

Halloween & Christmas Tournaments

These are mixed American tournaments for age 7 – 1st years. The players are divided by age and ability so everyone gets a good, sociable game. There is a special section for our younger players. These are all about fun.

Junior Championships
The Junior Championships are held on the last week of August each year. This is a great fun way to finish off the summer and many children live in the club for the week.

U10s

In 2017 the U10s section is for children who were born in 2007. The U10s manager this year is Sarah Walsh and she will keep you informed about all upcoming events.

Round Robins
Round Robins are introduced at Under 10 Level and all under 10 members are encouraged to participate. Players are grouped, where possible according to level and ability. Round Robins are a great way to get our younger players used to playing games and the rules of tennis.

It is a good start to competitive tennis in an encouraging environment. Your manager will be in touch prior to the event.

Ladders

Once the children move into the U12 age group they are formed into a Ladder. The ladder placements is based on previous play in U10s and coaching standard. Updated ladder link Rules of Play.pdf

The ladders are a great way for children of the same age group to get match play against someone of a similar standard. Especially at U12s, every game the children play improves their game hugely – it’s great to see. The committee uses the ladder results to see the level and enthusiasm of the players and club representative teams are chosen based on the ladder. It is also a great way for parents to get their children together with others to play a social game of singles or doubles and develop friendships as they have readily available information of other children of a similar standard. The initial ladder is a starting point. If children think they should be higher, then they should challenge as much as they can to move upwards. The U12 ladder is always very active.

Round Robin Box Leagues

In 2017 we introduced Round Robins Box Leagues for our Under 12s Boys and Girls. The sole objective of these leagues is to encourage the boys and girls to play more matches. These Round Robins have been set-up based on level so every effort has been made to group players based on ability. There will be small prizes for the winner of each group. In addition the winner in each group will move up to the next group and the player placed last will move down to the group below. 13 games will be played with the 13 th game being played as a tie-break game.

Stars & Stripes (S&S)

This is an inter club competition run twice a year between 8 local clubs. It was introduced to form another level of competition under the top league players so that more ‘club’ members get external match play while maintaining a competitive level. It is run in March and October for five weeks.

The U12s team has three boys’ pairings and three girls’ pairings. The teams are chosen based on ladder placement, availability and enthusiasm. The U12s manager will contact everyone prior to the season. Training will be organised once the teams are finalised.

Leagues

Leinster Tennis U12 Summer League runs during the months of April and May on Sundays at 4pm

Format: teams of 6 players playing three doubles matches. Can be 6 boys or 6 girls or a mixed team of 3 boys and 3 girls. Normal first two sets played; with a regular tie break at the end first two sets if required. In the event of a third set then a champion’s tie break is played to 10 points instead of a regular set.

This is of a high standard and runs for 4-5 weeks as a round robin and then progressing, if successful, to elimination stages. This league overlaps the spring Stars & Stripes and therefore we only enter teams if we have availability and commitment from a strong squad of players

Other external Competitions

There are a number of under 12 external competitions that run throughout the year. Information on these will be posted under Upcoming Events or visit www.leinstertennis.ie

Finals Day is on the Sunday with great tennis, lunchtime BBQ and late afternoon prizegiving.

U14s

In 2017 the U14s section is for children who were born in 2003/2004. The U14s manager this year is Susan McKeever and she will keep you informed about upcoming events.

Leagues

  • Leinster Tennis Regional LeagueThis league is aimed at less experienced players (Class 3 and below, less than 125 ranking points). The round robin starts in May and runs till mid-June. If successful, teams then qualify to the elimination stages until early/mid-July. Matches are played on Tuesdays at 4pm. Clubs are grouped geographically – our area is South Dublin & North Wicklow. The team consists of 4 boys, 4 girls or a mixed team of 2 and 2. Format is a singles and a doubles match each (in the case of a mixed team they will play a girls doubles and a boys doubles). 11 games each with the 11th game being a regular tie-break. This is a great league for those wishing to gain match experience as it is not as strong as other leagues but still very competitive. However, we only enter a team if there is strong commitment from players as it is the summer season and many players are away in June/July.
  • DLTC LeagueThe round robin stage runs in Sep-Oct. If successful, teams then qualify to the elimination stages.Matches are played on Sundays at 4pm or 5.30pm. The teams consist of 6 boys or 6 girls. Format is three doubles matches. Normal first two sets played; with a regular tie break at the end first two sets if required. In the event of a third set then a champion’s tie break is played to 10 points instead of a regular set.

It is run on Sunday nights for one hour between 6pm and 8pm (2 sections). On the last night, the tennis is followed by pizza, a quiz and prizegiving. Great fun!

Ladders

At the end of each year we lose those players who move to the ladies’ section and we gain those moving up from U14s. The new ladder is based on previous ladder positions in U18s and U14s. Updated ladder link Rules of Play.pdf
The committee uses the ladder results to see the level and enthusiasm of the players and club representative teams are chosen based on the ladder as this is the most impartial and fair way we have at present. The initial ladder is a starting point. Child Protection

Blackrock Bowling and Tennis Club has adopted and implemented the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sport as set out by Tennis Ireland, as an integral part of club policy on children and club membership.
Upon joining the Club or renewal of membership, all members agree to abide by the Club’s Child Protection Policy and Codes of Conduct. These policies and codes are set out below and all members and their children should read and become familiar with them.

Blackrock Bowling and Tennis club is not responsible for providing adult supervision for children other than at organised junior coaching, junior camps and junior tournaments. Blackrock Bowling and Tennis club does not accept responsibility for juniors that arrive to the club to play on their own. It is strongly recommended that if children are playing in the club independently of the club’s organised activities that a parent/guardian stays with them for the duration of the activity.

The club’s child protection officers are available should any member have any questions or require any assistance in relation to child protection in the club.

The Child Protection Officers for Blackrock Bowling and Tennis Club are:

Mr. Robert Heron

Ms. Heidi Hickey
